Locate a detail

Check what is missing

Use PDF chat for the detail you need

Choose a reading task that fits your document. The answer depends on the text the tool can extract.

Research papers

Ask how the authors define a term, describe a method or qualify a conclusion. Check the method and limitations together before citing the paper.

Reports

Find the discussion behind a result or compare statements from different sections. Read tables and chart labels in the PDF when they carry the evidence.

Handbooks and course notes

Ask for an explanation of a difficult passage or gather rules about one topic. Use follow-up questions to work through exceptions and unfamiliar vocabulary.

Check your PDF before you start

Copy a few sentences from the pages you want to ask about into a text editor. Check that the words stay readable and in order. This can help you spot text extraction problems.

Text-based PDFs

Use a PDF with text you can select and copy.

A PDF exported from the original document is often a better source than a scan.

Scanned pages

A scan needs OCR before the chat can work with its text.

Use a separate OCR tool to create a PDF with selectable text, then check the recognised words before using it here.

Tables and diagrams

Text extraction can mix columns or omit words inside images.

Check table headings, units and visual information in the original PDF.

File size

Choose a PDF up to 100 MB.

For an oversized file, prepare a smaller PDF with the relevant pages. Keep track of its original page numbers.

Read the evidence before using the answer

AI can miss a condition, confuse two passages or give an answer that the document does not support. A page reference helps you find evidence; it does not prove the answer is correct.

Compare the quote with the page. Check the wording, numbers, units and nearby exceptions. If you shortened the PDF before uploading it, its page numbers may differ from the original document’s.

Separate the author’s words from the explanation. Ask which part of an answer comes from the PDF and which part is an interpretation. Request the supporting passage if the distinction is unclear.

Keep the original source for your work. Cite the PDF itself in a paper or report. For a consequential decision, review the relevant source material with a qualified person.

What is AI PDF chat?

AI PDF chat lets you ask questions about text extracted from a PDF. Ask for an explanation, a specific detail or a follow-up about a passage.

Can I chat with a PDF for free without signing up?

Can I ask for a summary of a PDF section?

Yes. You can ask the chat to summarise a topic or section, then ask about the points you want to explore. Name the section and the level of detail you need. A summary can leave out important caveats, so keep the original available.

Does Chat PDF give page references?

Yes. Ask for a supporting quote and a page reference. Open that page in your PDF to check the evidence and the surrounding text.

Can Chat PDF read scanned documents?

The chat needs extractable text. For a scan, run OCR in a separate tool first and check the recognised text. Words inside images and diagrams may be absent from the extracted text.

Why is the answer incomplete or different from the PDF?

The PDF may have missing text, mixed column order or image content that text extraction cannot read. AI can also misinterpret readable text. Ask a narrower question, name the section and compare the response with the source.

Will chatting change my PDF?

Chat PDF answers questions about the document’s text. It does not edit the original PDF. Keep the original file as the source for any quotes or conclusions you use.

What you send for AI processing

Your browser reads the PDF and extracts its text. The text and your questions are sent to an AI service to generate answers.

Choose documents you are allowed to share for AI processing. Read Convertok’s Privacy Policy before using confidential material. Questions you type can also contain sensitive information.
