Three steps

How to crop an image

Start with the original photo so you have room to choose your crop.

  1. Choose your photo

Select one JPG, PNG or another supported image, up to 100 MB.

  2. Choose what to keep

If ratio options are shown, choose the shape you need. Enter Width and Height in pixels, then use X and Y to position the crop inside your image.

  3. Crop and download

Select Crop image, then download the result when it is ready.

Crop settings

Choose the area you want to keep

Cropping keeps the part inside the selected area and removes everything outside it. Choose the shape and size you need, then position the area over the subject you want to keep.

Ratio
Square
Width
1000 px
Height
1000 px
X
900 px
Y
500 px

Square selects a 1:1 shape. Width and Height set the crop size in pixels. X measures from the left edge and Y from the top. Setting both to 0 starts the crop at the image’s top-left corner. Increase X to move right and Y to move down; decrease them to move left or up. Keep X + Width within your image’s width and Y + Height within its height. Any part of the area outside the image is left out, so the result comes out smaller than the size you entered.

Before you use the crop

Check that the subject is complete and the saved dimensions suit your layout. A website or app may trim the image again to fit a profile picture or page layout.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Help with exact dimensions, transparency, animation and crop errors.

Can I crop to an exact pixel size?

Yes. Enter the required Width and Height in pixels, then use X and Y to position the area inside your image. Square chooses a 1:1 shape, not a fixed pixel size. In our photo test, entering 1000 for both dimensions produced a 1000 × 1000 px JPG.

Does cropping keep a PNG’s transparent background?

Our test PNG kept both fully transparent and partly transparent pixels after cropping. The downloaded file remained a PNG. Check the crop against a coloured background to see transparent edges clearly.

Will an animated GIF still move after cropping?

In our three-frame test, the downloaded GIF kept all three frames, their timing and continuous looping. The same crop was applied to each frame. Play your downloaded GIF to check the full animation.

Does Crop Image crop every page of a TIFF?

Our three-page TIFF returned as a TIFF with all three pages, each cropped to 240 × 200 px using the same settings. Check every page in a TIFF viewer before using the result.

Why does my crop look soft when enlarged?

A tight crop contains fewer pixels. Enlarging it cannot recover detail that was not captured in the source. Start with a larger original or keep a wider area if you need a larger result.

Why will my image not crop?

Check the supported file types and the 100 MB limit. Width and Height accept whole numbers from 1 to 50,000 px; X and Y must be 0 or positive whole numbers. If the result is smaller than the size you entered, part of the area was outside your photo. Reduce the crop size or change its position so the whole area fits. If the file cannot be read, try a standard JPG or PNG copy.

Is Crop Image free?

Yes. Crop Image is free to use and does not require sign-up.
